Prominent Shia cleric Sheikh Hussein al-Maatouk, Secretary General of the Islamic Alliance has been absolved of charges of violating national unity and mosque charter. The Kuwaiti criminal court announced his acquittal on Wednesday.
The Public Prosecution had wrongly accused renowned Shia leader Sheikh al-Maatouk of circulating false information and violating the national unity and mosque charter laws for his speech he delivered during Friday prayers at the Imam Hussein (AS) Mosque. In his address, the religious scholar strongly criticized the state security forces for arresting many young Shiites, and torturing them to extract confessional statements vis-à-vis the case of “al-Abdali cell”.
The Court of Appeal acquitted most of the Shia Muslim youths in the “al-Abdali cell” case around 2 months ago. However, the court upheld two death sentences and one life sentence against three defendants that was also against the spirit of justice.
