MP Ibrahim Kanaan said on Sunday during a conference held by the Free Patriotic Movement on municipalities in Sin el Fil that in order for Taef Accord to be applied, one must first decree a new electoral law that preserves equity of representation and expanded administrative decentralization.
Kanaan called for financial reform to replace blackmail, a thing which could materialize through a reformative budget plan.
“Administrative decentralization reconciles leniency in providing for the people’s needs with the particularity of coexistence. It should be a focal point…in line with the development of systems of governance in the world,” said the deputy.
Kanaan voiced certainty that President Michel Aoun would sign a decree on said decentralization, which provided financial independence for local authorities, along with administrative freedom.
“The central authority must admit to the existence of local interests different from national ones.”
“For those who want to apply Taef Accord, they must apply all its articles…and this starts with an electoral law that ensures actual partnership and genuine equity as well as expanded administrative decentralization.”
