Foreign Minister, Gibran Bassil, handed President of Egypt Abdel Fattah el-Sisi a letter from his Lebanese counterpart, General Michel Aoun, while on a visit to the Federal Palace in Cairo on Monday.
Aoun’s letter highlighted the importance of bolstering bilateral ties in a way that benefited both Egypt and Lebanon, especially in fighting terrorism.
The Lebanese President also asserted the need for Egypt to regain its pioneering role in the region.
Aoun lauded Sisi’s administration and accepted the official invitation to visit the Arab country soon.
The Foreign Minister began his official visit to Egypt with a meeting with Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of St. Mark and leader of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria, Pope Tawadros II.
Bassil offered his condolences to the Pope after a recent terrorist attack targeted a church in Cairo. The men discussed the status of Christians of the Orient and the role both Egypt and Lebanon played in the dialogue across religions, as well as protection of minorities and openness to the other.
“The pillars of the church, temple and mosque should stand high in testament to the victory of our free thought,” said Bassil.
