Zarif holds talks with Bassil, stresses both countries facing two common enemies

NNA – Caretaker Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil and his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif maintained on Monday that both Lebanon and the Islamic Republic were facing two common enemies–the Zionists and takfiri terrorists.

“We are equally concerned with facing terrorism that is infiltrating throughout the region,” Bassil told a joint news conference, following talks with the visiting diplomat.

“Lebanon and Iran are both facing the racist Israeli danger, and that of Daesh,” he said.

Zarif arrived earlier this evening in Beirut, and headed to Baabda to congratulate newly-elected President Michel Aoun.

“This visit has a special significance after Lebanon exited a political quandary and entered a stage of recovery from the political disease,” Bassil said.

“The Lebanese proved that their decision is made in Lebanon,” he added.

Tackling bilateral ties, Bassil underlined that Lebanon and Iran had political relations that would be translated before the international instances “where we share political support.”

For his part, Zarif maintained that both Lebanon and the Islamic Republic were facing common challenges.

“The solid and constructive political convergence between Lebanon and Iran is also a solid and very constructive cooperation,” he said, thanking Lebanon for the support it expresses for Iran before the international instances.

“We are undeniably facing common challenges, and we do believe that the Zionist danger jeopardizes the people of the region and the world,” he corroborated.

“In addition to the common challenges, we believe that there are wide horizons of interests, especially on the level of economic ties and trade,” he indicated.
