The international group of support for Lebanon, comprised of the United Nations, the Arab League, the EU, the UK, Germany, Italy, France, Russia, and China, welcomed the election of the new president of the country. ” The members of the International Support Group for Lebanon congratulate Mr. Michel Aoun on his election today as President of the Republic of Lebanon,” reads the statement. More than 2 years the parliament of Lebanon has been unable to elect a president, which caused a political crisis in the country. The former President Michel Sleiman resigned in May of 2014. The international group of support for Lebanon expressed a hope that the new head of state will path a way for political reforms in the country.
