President Michel Aoun on Monday promised work on preserving security and stability in Lebanon, especially in the wake of the agreement reached in the nation, vowing to use his status to make peace between the “brotherly” countries in conflict.
“In Lebanon, we reached an agreement over our nation, and we will preserve its security and stability. We will also preserve all the factions of the people,” Aoun told a reception ceremony hosted for the Lebanese Diaspora by the Lebanese Embassy in Cairo, at Ritz-Carlton Hotel.
Rejecting “negative neutrality,” the President showed little appetite for the term “self-dissociation.” “Yet we will use our status to make peace between the brotherly countries that are in conflict.”
“Lebanon’s neutrality is positive, because taking sides in disputes between brothers would mean that we have become a party to the dispute,” he explained.
“Why are Arabs inter-fighting? why does mediation come from outside? why isn’t there one Arab will to fight?” Aoun wondered.
“We in Lebanon constitute a mosaic of communities living together, because we have never been against the freedom of belief; when we disagree, we do over politics. Do not believe that we ever fought over religion,” he concluded.
