NNA – Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon Ms. Sigrid Kaag met today in Moscow with Deputy Russian Foreign Minister Gennadiy Gatilov and other senior officials. Discussions focused on the situation in Lebanon and regional developments.
Special attention was given to key elements of the Presidential Statement of the Security Council (PRST) of 22 July in particular the Security Council’s call for a compromise agreement to end the political and institutional crisis in the country. This includes the need to ensure the functioning of State institutions in accordance with the constitution and the democratic process so that Lebanon can effectively address the challenges it faces.
The Special Coordinator underlined the need for continued international support for Lebanon to help the country address the impact of the Syria crisis. Security conditions in Lebanon were also discussed, alongside the importance of predictable and timely support for the Lebanese Armed Forces.
Deputy Foreign Minister Gatilov and Special Coordinator Kaag also discussed Security Council resolution 1701.
Special Coordinator Kaag is scheduled to brief the Security Council on 10 November.
